Aaron, Hank (1934- ), American baseball player, nicknamed The Hammer, whose 715 home runs broke the record previously held by Babe Ruth. He was born Henry L. Aaron in Mobile, Alabama. Aaron, a right fielder, played for the Milwaukee Braves (after 1966, the Atlanta Braves) from 1954 to 1974, when he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. In 1957 Aaron earned the National League's most valuable player award after leading the Braves to a World Series championship title. On April 8, 1974, while still with the Braves, he hit his 715th home run, topping the previous all-time record of 714, owned by Babe Ruth since the 1930s. When Aaron retired after the 1976 season, he held many career batting records, including most home runs (755), total bases (6856), extra-base hits (1477), runs batted in (2297), and times at bat (12,364). Aaron also appeared in 24 All-Star games during his career and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.
